In April 1946, Mr. T. Chalmer Bryant moved
his family from Charlotte, N.C. to Atlanta, GA to establish a headquarters
from which he could build a motor club organization covering the
Southeast United States. Mr. Bryant had worked with the N.C. State
Motor Club in Charlotte since 1938 and left his state manager's
position with the blessing and support of John G. Frazier, Jr.,
the owner and President of the North Carolina club.
Using a coat closet at the Reed House Hotel in Chattanooga, Tennessee,
Mr. Bryant started the Tennessee State Automobile Association on
April 15, 1946 with himself and Mr. Heyden Campbell, of Chattanooga,
as the sales force. In December of 1946, Mr. Bryant convinced Mr.
Frazier along with the owners of independent motor clubs in South
Carolina and Georgia to form the National Automobile Association.
Originally NAA was an umbrella organization to the four independent
motor clubs to provide a common name association, bail bond service,
and travel benefits for all the members.
In the next three years Mr. Bryant formed and organized motor clubs
in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana,
and West Virginia. All of the clubs were associated with the National
Automobile Association, bringing the total to twelve clubs.
The motor clubs of NAA grew to hundreds of thousands of members
and in the 1970's Mr. Bryant acquired the South Carolina State Motor
Club, organized the Georgia Automobile Association as an NAA club,
(the original NAA affiliate in Georgia was sold to a competitor)
and also acquired complete ownership of NAA.
Mr. Bryant built a new headquarters in 1966 and moved from his original
location on Spring Street in downtown Atlanta to our current location
on the Northeast Expressway and continued to operate the motor clubs
until his death in July 1990 at the age of 82. Mr. Bryant's dream
to have all of the clubs operating as one club under the one banner
of NAA became a reality in the months following his death due to
the work done by him in preparation for that event and his vision
for one motor club in the Southeast providing world wide benefits.
Mr. Bryant's daughter, Sally Bryant Hinson, and her husband (the
former General Counsel for NAA), Jerry T. Hinson picked up where
Mr. Bryant left off.
The last decade of the twentieth century saw NAA continue its tradition
of unparalleled service to its members based on Mr. Bryant's example
of a caring relationship between the club and the member. NAA has
also introduced new benefits and new memberships to keep pace with
the changing world. In spite of the many changes in the world in
the twenty first century, the Full Service Motor Club, that is NAA,
still provides that "Peace of Mind" when emergencies arise
as well as the many benefits of club membership.
We are keeping our commitment
to keep pace with the changing world by updating our membership.
Our new Executive
Membership & Executive
PLUS Membership insures that our members continue to have the
